Future Faculty Workshop 2024: Natural Sciences & Engineering

The GradFUTURES Future Faculty series for science and engineering is designed for graduate students and postdocs who are few years away from the faculty job market. This series will provide clarity of faculty life in diverse institutions (e.g. R1 university, liberal arts college, community college) and reveal essential skills and mindsets for career success. Through data-transparency, a systems lens, and knowledge of resources and opportunities, you can craft an intentional plan for professional development, while learning from Princeton faculty, staff and alums who serve as faculty in diverse institutions.

July 29- Day 1: Faculty Landscape, Funding and Open Science

Day 1 of the Future Faculty series for science and engineering will cover:

  • The landscape of faculty roles in diverse institutions (R1, liberal arts college and community colleges)
  • Funding: sources, discovery, lifecycle, resources and support
  • Open science, research transparency and reproducibility
  • Success metrics: data-driven and survey-based insights on faculty hiring trends

Lunch will be served.

Day 1 Speakers

July 30- Day 2: Faculty Life in Princeton and DEI

Day 2 of the Future Faculty series for science and engineering will cover:

  • Perspectives of new faculty on the transition to research independence
  • The development and evolution of an independent research program
  • Leading and sustaining a lab: projects, finances, and people
  • Clarity on the tenure and promotion process
  • Holistic and inclusive mentoring
  • Diversity, equity and inclusion

Day 2 Speakers

July 31-Day 3: Grantsmanship, teaching & community college faculty life

Day 3 of the Future Faculty series for science and engineering will cover:

  • Building interdisciplinary and collaborative research program
  • Grantsmanship: systems view, approaches, skills and mindset for success 
  • Reflective and inclusive teaching practices
  • Faculty life in public university and community college, impact of AI and COVID.

Lunch will be served.

Reception

The series will wrap with a networking reception for speakers and attendees at 4.30 pm.

Day 3 Speakers

Day 4: Alum Panel on faculty life across higher education

​​​​​​In this 1 hour (12-1 pm) online panel, Princeton grad alumni who serve as faculty in R1 and liberal arts college and community college will share about their professional lives and distinct experiences.
