Your Host Art Hx Led by Professor Anna Arabindan-Kesson, Art Hx: Visual and Medical Legacies of British Colonialism is a cross-disciplinary and multi-media research platform that explores the historical and ongoing entanglements of art, race, and medicine. Through the website and public programming, Art Hx—inspired by Hx, the clinical abbreviation used to represent “history”—brings artists, writers, health professionals, and scholars into dynamic conversations around artworks and archival objects, seeking to expose and dismantle racist and violent structures that shape our present. Fellowship Description Art Hx is a research project that explores the historical, and ongoing, entanglements of art, race and medicine, with an emphasis on histories of slavery and colonialism and their long-ranging implications. Currently, Art Hx consists of a website with published resources, a series of public programs and an artist residency program. Over the next few years, Art Hx will expand these different strands through closer collaborations with local and international institutions and community partners. Duties and Responsibilities Fellow would work to develop an artist residency program at Princeton that could bring artists to campus and have them engage with different campus unitsFellow would work with PI to identify prospective artistsFellow would liaise with different units to map out how Art Hx could support their needs for an artist residency programFellow would be involved in some fundraising/development strategy to ensure the program is sustainableFellow would liaise with and oversee residency parameters/timetabling and work with artists to ensure they can access specific archives/resources/units when they attend campusFellow would have the opportunity to potentially curate a show of artist work, or organize a program around the artists’ work that would be an important aspect of their Professional development/CV Building UAF Mentor Anna Arabindan-Kesson Associate Professor and Director, Art Hx Professor Anna Arabindan-Kesson is an assistant professor of African American and Black Diasporic art with a joint appointment in the Department of Art and Archaeology. Born in Sri Lanka, she completed undergraduate degrees in New Zealand and Australia, and worked as a Registered Nurse in the UK before completing her PhD in African American Studies and Art History at Yale University. Professor Arabindan-Kesson's research and teaching focus on Black Diaspora Art, with an emphasis on histories of race, empire, and medicine in the long 19th century.
