University of Education, Winneba

Fellowship Description

This fellowship is an enriching and intensive opportunity for emerging historians to deepen their understanding and skills in archival research and scholarly publication. Based primarily in Ghana during the summer, the fellowship offers a hands-on, mentor-guided experience that immerses fellows in the rich historical archives of the region. Under the supervision of experienced historians, fellows engage in a structured program that begins with identifying and extracting valuable historical data from archives based on selected research topics. This initial phase is critical as it sets the foundation for scholarly writing.

Each week, fellows meet with their mentors to discuss their findings and assess the feasibility of developing these into publishable academic papers. These discussions are crucial for refining research questions and methodologies. Following the research phase, the fellowship focuses on the drafting process, where fellows work closely with their mentors to write, edit, and refine their articles to meet the standards of academic publishing.

Additionally, the fellowship is designed to be flexible, accommodating changes in location by allowing fellows to continue their work and mentorship remotely from the United States when necessary. This adaptability ensures that the research and publication process remains uninterrupted. Throughout the fellowship, participants can observe and partake in their mentors’ teaching activities, enhancing their pedagogical skills. This holistic approach fosters a deep engagement with historical scholarship and prepares fellows to contribute significantly to the academic community through regular publications.
